The Randwick races are held in the Royal Randwick racecourse, which is New South Wales’ largest racetrack. The Royal Randwick, dubbed as such through the request of Queen Elizabeth, has been holding race events for more than 160 years. It was formerly called Sandy Course but in 1992 the AJC renamed it to Royal Randwick as per request by the Queen and it has been called as such ever since.

The Royal Randwick Racecourse

A source of pride for Australians and it is a testament to their dedication to the sport of horse-racing. One look at the racetrack and you will agree to that. Located just five klicks from Sydney's city central, the Royal Randwick has a sprawling track that is about 2,227 metres in circumference and with a 410 metre straight with a slope in the end going slightly uphill. One can't help but stare in awe at the largeness of this racecourse which is said to be the largest in New South Wales.

Back then in 1833, the Royal Randwick was better known as the Sandy Course, due to the condition of the ground. When the track became worse in 1840, people decided to use it only for training horses and they discontinued holding races. For twenty years the Royal Randwick hosted no race events but when the Australian Jockey Club moved to Randwick from Homebush the Royal Randwick Racecourse became alive again with hosting numerous horse-race events.

In 1992 Queen Elizabeth requested that this racecourse be named “Royal Randwick”, an apt title due to its enormity. The racecourse has over four training tracks, an equine pool and a bullring. It can also accommodate 650 horses and more than 20 trainers. Today, the Royal Randwick Racecourse is officially recognized as the racing headquarters of Sydney.

Many of Australia's famous race events are held in this clockwise track. Punters and spectators can watch the Epsom Handicap in this racecourse and the Australian Derby is also a regular event here. During the months of April and May, the Royal Randwick holds the Autumn Racing Carnival that consists of four race events which are all Group 1. These are:

  • The AJC Australian Derby—a set weight race of about 2400m for 3 year old horses with a prize money of $1.3 million.
  • The AJC Australian Oaks—a set weight race, with a distance of 2400m, for fillies that are three years old with a prize money of $350,000
  • The Doncaster Handicap—a $1.5 million Open Handicap race run over a distance of 1600m
  • The Epsom Handicap—a 1600m race for three year old horses or older with a prize money of $350,000
  • The Flight Stakes—a 1600m race worth $300,000 for three year old fillies
  • The George Main Stakes—a 1600m race (weight-for-age) with a prize money of $300,000
